Dr. Jacques Morcos is a distinguished neurosurgeon, celebrated for his expertise in skull base and cerebrovascular surgery. With a robust medical career spanning over three decades, Dr. Morcos is currently the Chair of the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of UTHealth Houston Neurosciences. He holds the prestigious Nancy, Clive, and Pierce Runnells Distinguished Chair in Neuroscience.
Dr. Morcos's academic journey began at the American University of Beirut, where he earned his medical degree. He furthered his training in England, with residencies at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Minnesota, followed by fellowships in cerebrovascular surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine and in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
Dr. Morcos is renowned for treating complex cerebrovascular conditions, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), dural arteriovenous fistulae, MoyaMoya disease, and stroke. His extensive experience in managing skull base tumors encompasses conditions like pituitary adenomas, meningiomas, and acoustic neuromas. He is proficient in both open surgical and minimally invasive techniques, such as microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm. Dr. Morcos is also adept in endonasal endoscopic approaches and radiosurgery.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Morcos has significantly contributed to the field through numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. His research interests include aneurysm surveillance, AVM registries, and the impact of targeted therapies on NF2 acoustic neuromas. He has pioneered advancements in vascular neuroanatomy and microsurgical techniques and co-founded the International Registry of MCA Bypass in Cerebral Ischemia. Dr. Morcos has delivered over 200 presentations worldwide and has trained dozens of fellows in his specialized fields.
Dr. Morcos is actively involved in national and international neurosurgical societies. He is the President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the President-elect of the World Federation of Skull Base Societies. His contributions to neurosurgery have been recognized with numerous awards, reflecting his dedication to advancing medical science and improving patient care.
